EMDR Therapy in London Bridge and Online

In Person EMDR Therapy in London Bridge and Borough

EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach recognized by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This innovative therapy is used to process distressing events and experiences, such as traumatic experiences, relationships, or events. EMDR involves a structured approach that incorporates eye movements, tapping, or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help individuals reprocess and heal from past traumas.

Complex trauma is a type of trauma that occurs over an extended period, usually within relationship contexts. It involves a series of smaller events that accumulate, leading to trauma responses similar to those in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This kind of trauma significantly affects an individual's mental and emotional well-being, often necessitating specialised treatment and support. Complex trauma can have long-lasting effects on a person's sense of self, relationships, and overall functioning. It is important for individuals who have experienced complex trauma to seek help from mental health professionals who are trained in trauma-informed care.

Process trauma and find healing

“We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present. Trauma results in a fundamental reorganization of the way mind and brain manage perceptions. It changes not only how we think and what we think about, but also our very capacity to think.”

― Bessel A. van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

Trauma impacts our relationship with ourselves

Traumas can be defined as experiences that cause people to develop erroneous beliefs about themselves or the world which keep them from living to their full potential and causing them suffering.

— Laurel Parnell

Trauma is held in the mind and the body

"We now understand that trauma’s imprint is both psychological and somatic. Traumatic memories are stored somatically (relating to or affecting the body) in the nervous system long after the events are over, the body continues to respond as if danger were ever present."

— Janina Fisher
